Description

Starship: The Hunt is a campus-wide treasure hunt that helps students explore the campus. Team up with friends to find hidden starships, snap a picture at each location, and race against other teams. The first team to capture all starship photos wins.

Initial Thought and Motivation

As a new student at Purdue, attending orientation was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I got to meet new friends and participate in school traditions. However, while the experience was fun, i feel like there is something missing, and the activities is kind of outdated. But the most exciting part about the campus was spotting a Starship! (The thing i’ve never seen before in my life).
After get to know what the starhip is i was thinking to myself:
“There is no way they are just a delivery service”
"It should be used for something fun during orientation to make the experience more enjoyable for students."
I started testing my idea around campus to see if other students have similar problems to mine, and to discover any additional issues they might be facing.

Finding

After interview a fews students who attended the Orientation aka BGR i have identified some interesting paint-points:
I wish students could explore the campus in a more fun and engaging way
Starships are such an icon on college campuses; they can be more than just a delivery service.
Some of the activities, although fun, feel a bit outdated.
It would be great if students could interact with other groups besides their assigned ones.
"BGR was a fun experience, and I met a lot of new people. However, I wish there were more opportunities to interact with students from different group beside those who is already in our group."
"BGR is full of exciting school traditions, which is great. However, some other activities feel a bit outdated, and I've already heard about most of them from my older sister. I wish we had some fresh and fun events that would get us more excited and meet more new people."
"The most interesting thing about college when I first stepped on campus was seeing a starship I've never seen anything like it before. I agree that the starship could be used for something fun, especially for new students like us."
"I wish the games and activities took place more around campus to help us get to know the area better, rather than just happening at Union Square at Purdue."

HMW Statement

How might we enhance orientation activities by using Starships to make them more fun, eliminate repetitive tasks, and maximize opportunities for new students to meet as many people as possible?

My Solution

Light Bulb Moment
“Why not turn it into an exciting campus adventure game? Students can explore, interact, and make unforgettable memories while having a blast!!”
What can be more perfect game than a treasure hunt game?
I conducted a Validation Workshop with the students to see if the idea is a suitable solution for each problems that we have and what feature of the game will help to benefit the student and help student the most:
Capture a team picture with the starship to create memories.
A hint feature to help students find the starship.
Ranking helps students compete with each other across different groups.
GPS helps students work together to find the starship.

User Persona & Storyboard

I have developed a user persona and a storyboard to demonstrate how the game actually works.

User-Flows and FIGMA TIME!!

Building on the current starship app, I have developed wireframes and a flow:

The hint feature helps them find the starship faster.
Live rankings display your team's progress.

Next Step

We need to thoroughly review the safety protocols to ensure that students are safe while playing the game.
Collaborate with the university to determine how staff will manage students and organize the game, as there will be a large number of participants.
Explore whether this activity would be a good fit for other events, not just for future orientations.
